Launched in November 2006 with World Vision Australia, the ‘Stitch in Time’ program is an ambitious and innovative program providing sewing machines and training to people living in poverty and crisis around the world.
The Stitch In Time program helps to transform communities, by empowering women and young people with the skills and equipment to earn their own incomes, become self sufficient and ultimately improve their lives and the lives of their families.
The program has been working exclusively in Africa with World Vision but now extends well beyond only that partnership. The next phases of the program include expanding domestically and also into Asia.
The Asian program will commence in May 2010 through Spotlight’s collaboration with the Cambodian Orphans Fund. Spotlight is looking to support orphans, vulnerable women and families in Siem Reap, Cambodia with machines and training opportunities as a first step.
There are two areas in which the Stitch in Time program will be involved with the Cambodian Orphans Fund. The first will be the Orphanage & Children's Centre, The other will be the Phoenix Project, which focuses on English language schools and vocational training to assist families break the cycle of poverty and become more self sufficient
A team of spotlight staff will be heading over to Cambodia on Sunday the 16th of May to see the program in action first hand. Follow their experiences in the Inspiration Room
