Add your own personal and creative touch to a modern long black coffee mug. As advertised in the Spotlight catalogue starting 7th July 2010.

Final Result

Materials

• white coffee mug
• methylated spirits
• fine tip indelible felt tip marker
• cotton wool or cotton q-tips
• a very fine paint brush
• a medium wash brush
• Porcelaine 150 Colours: Citrine yellow. Ming Blue.

Step 1

Preparation

Using methylated spirits carefully degrease the surface to be decorated to ensure perfect colour adherence.

Step 2

Template

Sketch your desired pattern on the coffee mug with a fine tip indelible felt tip marker or light pencil.

If you make a mistake, clean with cotton and methlyated spirits.

Step 3

Colouring

Shake all colours well before application and, if necessary, add some thinner to obtain the desired consistency. Using a medium wash, apply colour to the biggest or lightest areas of your desired image.
An evenly applied colour will give the best results. Allow to dry thoroughly for about 30 minutes.

Now, using a very fine paint brush, apply the trims and highlights in a darker colour. For a smooth line, hold your brush steady and apply the paint by rotating the mug instead of moving your hand.

Step 4

Finishing

When the pattern is finished, allow to dry for 24 hours in the air (allow an extra 12 hours if paint is applied thickly).

Where possible, allow to dry in a warm and dust free environment.

Then place your work in a cold kitchen oven.

Set the thermostat to 150°C (300°F). When the oven has reached this temperature, cure/bake for 35 minutes, then open the oven door and allow to cool.

Once baked, your coffee mug is dishwasher safe.

Step 5

Clean Up

Wash all brushes clean in luke warm soapy water.
