Lantern Festival Quilt & Cushions

Quilt -
Quilt measures: 44” x 60” (112cm x 152.5cm approx)

Fabrics are from Lantern Festival range
• Lantern Festival panel - 4 x 6
• 30cm Lanterns - lime (A)
• 30cm Butterflies - lilac (B)
• 30cm Parasols - multi (C)
• 70cm Lily - blue (D) includes binding
• 125cm x 165cm backing fabric
• 125cm x 165cm Sew Easy Cosy Cotton batting
• Matching Gutermann cotton thread
• Rotary cutter, mat & quilter’s rulers
• Scissors, seam ripper
• Hand needle
• Sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot

Cushion & Bolster -

Fabrics are from Lantern Festival range
• Lantern Festival panel - 4 x 3
• 30cm Lanterns - lime (A)
• 45cm Butterflies - lilac (B)
• 40cm Parasols - multi (C)
• 70cm Lily - blue (D) includes binding
• 35cm zip
• No 18 cushion insert (46cm x 46cm)
• Bolster insert
• Matching Gutermann cotton thread
• Rotary cutter, mat and quilter’s rulers
• Scissors, seam ripper
• Hand needle
• Sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot
Step 1
Quilt Top Instructions
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
Step 2
Trim the fan borders from each side of the panel.
Step 3
Cut 2 x 4½” strips from each of fabrics A, B, C & D.

Sew the strips together making two sets of four strips and press.

Crosscut the sets into 5½” strips.
Step 4
For the borders sew 3 sets together end to end to create strips of 12 squares for the sides and 4 sets together to create strips of 16 squares for the top and bottom borders.
Step 5
Centre the 12-square strips on each side and pin in place.

Sew side borders in place, press and trim ends.

Repeat for the top and bottom borders, using the 16-square strips.

Press.
Step 6
Finishing
Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together and quilt as desired.

For the binding cut 5 x 2½” strips from fabric D and join to make one long strip.

Press in half lengthwise, pin to the edge on the right side of the quilt and stitch.

Turn to the back and hand stitch.

Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
Step 7
Cushion Instructions
Cut one square from the panel fabric.

Cut two x 4½” strips from fabric A for inner borders.

Cut two x 2½” strips from fabric B for outer borders.
Step 8
Sew the inner borders to opposite sides of the square, then to the remaining two sides, repeat for the outer borders, press.
Step 9
For the back cut one 13” x 20½” and one 7¾” x 20½” rectangle from fabric C.

Pin pieces together with right sides facing along one 20½” side.

Using a 5/8” seam allowance, sew a seam 3¼” in from each end leaving 14” opening in the middle of the seam.

Press seam allowance open.

Turn over to right side, pin and sew 35cm zipper into opening.
Step 10
With the zip open, pin the back to the front and sew together.

Turn right side out and press, paying particular attention to the fold around the outside edge.
Step 11
Sew a seam between the inner and outer borders all the way around to form a tailored border.

Place cushion insert into cover.
Step 12
Bolster Instructions
From the panel cut a strip 3 squares x 3 squares, fold together top to bottom, right sides facing and sew.

Press.
Step 13
From fabric B cut two strips 4” x 23¾” for the ends.
Step 14
Fold each in half and sew a 1” seam leaving 3” open.

Press seam open and topstitch on each side of the seam, 1/8” in from the seam/edge.

On the open long side press under 1/8” then press under ¾” and sew 5/8” in from the fold to form casing.

Repeat for opposite end.
Step 15
With right sides facing sew the ends to the bolster body.

Make 2 x 30” ties or use purchased cord to thread through casing at each end of bolster.

Place bolster insert into cover and pull up ties at each end and tie in a bow.
Note
All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. ¼” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

    • I have tried quite a few Quilt patterns from sporlight stores and I find as a beginner in quilting they are very easy to follow instructions can,t wait to make the lantern festival Quilt and cushions. with the help of the spotlight staff
      they have helped alot .
