Mystery Quilt: WEEK FIVE

- Covering more intermediate knitting with Intermediate Knitting WEEK FIVE: FAIR ISLE.
- Materials
- The Quilt is made using Moda Vera Marvel 8ply (100g balls).
- Step 1
- SQUARE TWENTY FOUR - CENTRAL MOTIF
You will need a pair each of 4.00mm and 4.50mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C5 - 1024 (blue)
C11 - 1013 (eclipse)
2 safety pins.
wool needle for sewing seams.
Using 4.00mm needles and C5, cast on 45 sts.
1st row - * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.
Last row forms moss st.
Work a further 4 rows moss st (5 rows in all).
Next row (wrong side) - (K1, P1) twice, slip these 4 sts onto a safety pin for left-hand side moss band, cast on one st (seam st), purl to last 4 sts, turn, cast on one st, slip last 4 sts onto a safety pin and leave for right-hand side moss st band.
Cont on these 39 sts for Fair Isle centre block.
Beg Fair Isle -
Note - Do not weave colours in Fair Isle but carry colour not in use loosely across on wrong side.
Always carry colours to end of rows and catch in at side edge.
Always carry C5 above C11.
Using 4.50mm needles, work rows 1 to 38 incl from Graph for Square 24.

Break off both colours and leave sts on needle.
Slip left-hand side moss st band sts onto 4.00mm needle so that right side is facing for next row.
Join in C5.
Next row - Cast on one st (seam st), K1, (P1, K1) twice... 5 sts.
Next row - K1, (P1, K1) twice.
Rep last row 50 times. Break off yarn, leave sts on safety pin.
Slip sts from right-hand side moss st band onto 4.00mm needle so that wrong side is facing for next row.
Join in C5.
Next row - Cast on one st, (K1, P1) twice, K1... 5 sts.
Next row - K1, (P1, K1) twice.
Rep last row 51 times. Do not break off yarn.
With right side facing, work across right-hand side moss st band sts, then Fair Isle centre block sts, then left-hand side band sts as folls -
Next row - (K1, P1) twice, K2tog, P2tog, * K1, P1 rep from * to last 9 sts, K1, P2tog, K2tog, (P1, K1) twice... 45 sts.
Next row - * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.
Rep last row 4 times.
Cast off loosely in moss st.
Using mattress st, join moss st bands to Fair Isle centre block.
Your square should measure approximately 21cm x 21cm if your tension is correct.
You may need to adjust your needle size to achieve the stated measurement.
If square is smaller than stated try again using one size larger needles, and if square is larger than stated try again using one size smaller needles. 
- Step 2
- SQUARE TWENTY FIVE - CENTRAL MOTIF
You will need a pair each of 4.00mm and 4.50mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C7 - 1021 (brown marle)
C12 - 1019 (chocolate)
2 safety pins.
wool needle for sewing seams.
Work as given for Square 24, using C7 in place of C5 and C12 in place of C11. 
- Step 3
- SQUARE TWENTY SIX - CENTRAL MOTIF
You will need a pair each of 4.00mm and 4.50mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C8 - 1023 (dark grey marle)
C9 - 1001 (white)
2 safety pins.
wool needle for sewing seams.
Work as given for Square 24, using C8 in place of C5 and C9 in place of C11. 
- Step 4
- SQUARE TWENTY SEVEN - BANDS OF FAIR ISLE
You will need a pair each of 4.00mm and 4.50mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C11 - 1013 (eclipse)
C1 - 1038 (duck egg)
C5 - 1024 (blue)
2 safety pins.
wool needle for sewing seams.
Using 4.00mm needles and C11, cast on 45 sts.
1st row - * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.
Last row forms moss st.
Work a further 4 rows moss st (5 rows in all).
Next row - (K1, P1) twice, slip these 4 sts onto a safety pin for left-hand side moss band, cast on one st (seam st ), purl to last 4 sts, turn, cast on one st, slip last 4 sts onto a safety pin for right-hand side moss st band.
Cont on these 39 sts for Fair Isle centre block.

C12 - 1019 (chocolate)
C2 - 1005 (fawn)
C6 - 1026 (dark red)
2 safety pins.
wool needle for sewing seams.
Work as given for Square 27, using C12 in place of C11, and C2 in place of C1 and C6 in place of C5. 
- Step 6
- SQUARE TWENTY NINE - BANDS OF FAIR ISLE
You will need a pair each of 4.00mm and 4.50mm knitting needles and 1 ball each of -
C10 - 1002 (black)
C3 - 1022 (light grey marle)
C8 - 1023 (dark grey marle)
2 safety pins.
wool needle for sewing seams.
Work as given for Square 27, using C10 in place of C11, and C3 in place of C1 and C8 in place of C5.
