HALLOWEEN SPELL BOOK BOX

Halloween Spell Book Box Project

LEVEL: EASY

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Papier mache book box
  • Paint - black and gold
  • Paintbrushes - small, medium and large
  • Sponge
  • Paint palette
  • Modge Podge or PVA glue
  • Stick on cardboard letters
  • Timber scroll

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1. Position your letters, stars and scroll onto the front of your box. Once you have your layout, using your small paintbrush, apply Modge Podge or PVA glue to the back of each component including letters, stars and scroll and stick into place. Though the letters are self-adhesive, they wont be sticky enough to permanently adhere to the box so we will need to give them a little extra help this time around. Allow adhesive to dry.

Step 2. Paint the front and back cover as well as the spine of the book in black paint. You will need to use a medium sized brush for the front to get in between the letters and shapes but you can use a large brush for the rest! Open the book up and stand to dry. Paint the remainder of the book in black paint. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Step 3. Dip your medium size brush in gold paint and dab of the excess on a clean section of your palette. Paint the top third of the front cover of your book, being sure to catch some paint around your stick on pieces as this will give a nice effect. Once you have finished painting this section, take your dry sponge and drag it across the surface you have just painted. The sponge will remove some of the paint and thats ok as this is the effect we are going for. Once you are happy with the look of this section move on to repeat the same process for the rest of the books front cover.

TIP: If you find that your paint has dried before you have dragged it over with the sponge, just add a drop of water to your sponge.

Step 4. Now that the front cover is done you can move onto adding this same aged effect to the rest of your book - good news is - you can now use your large brush. It is up to you if you would prefer to leave the book/box interior black or add the effect here too. Let the paint dry and you are good to go!
